Surabi
Founded by generation 2006 of Karawitan college students of STSI on 2008 under the name SURABI. With eighteen members, the group consistently presents the new music creation by using traditional and modern instruments. The group tries to mix the west and east music which is definitely different on its working style: more explored, and also more flexible in pouring its musical idea. The changing on its working style is the direct influence of some experiments and also the instruments managing.
The name Surabi was inspired by a song which has Sundanese and Arabian implications: it simply can be said that. Yet for the members, the meaning of Surabi is not that simple. The members have another meaning of the word Surabi where the round shape of Surabi means a perfect round which doesn’t have a beggining and an ending spots which becomes the motivation for the members to totaly create their work.
Besides that, the inner side of the perfect round which has no corner and partition, we consider it as today’s condition that there’s no more obstacles among the nations; the result of a mixing between west and east cultures evidently can be an interesting music which is enjoyed by public.
The instruments used by Surabi are not only traditional instruments but also modern instruments which are conga, trumpet, acoustic guitar, keyboard, trombone, bass guitar, jimbe, bongo and guitar oud so that the working of the music is wider and can explore music unlimitedly from the exist genre.
On June 2009, Surabi took part in an event which involved the West Java world music communities in a show entitled “World Music Appreciation at Dago Plaza.” And on October, Surabi also involved in a show which organized by Republic Entertain entitled “Bambu Nusantara 3, World Music Festival” at Paris Van Java Mall which also involved many Indonesian famous musician.
